September is the most gorgeous month in Southern Colorado and Northeastern New Mexico with fall colors, perfect temperatures, and crisp blue skies, but like anything in the Rocky Mountains, it can change quickly. The best choice for clothing is several light layers to accommodate wind, rain, or sunny skies.

TIPS
Drink water.  Then drink some more.  The arid weather, elevation, (especially if you're a low-lander), and sun can cause dehydration and altitude sickness.

Watch for elk, deer, bears, and any other critters of the Rocky Mountains scampering in front of your car, into your lunch, or in front of your camera.

This land is rich in history, from the Folsom Man, to the early days of the Santa Fe Trail, the railroad era, and is rich in mining and cowboy heritage.  Take the opportunity to explore and appreciate the cultures of the area and its architecture.
